What is an Ignition Interlock Device (IID)?

An Ignition Interlock Device (IID), also called a car breathalyzer, is a device that measures breath alcohol content (BrAC). It is typically installed in your vehicle as part of an administrative or legal requirement after drunk driving. Learn more about Smart Start's Ignition Interlock here.

How do I know if Smart Start’s devices are compliant with my program?

Smart Start is on Oklahoma's list of state-approved Ignition Interlock providers. Smart Start’s Ignition Interlock Devices (IIDs) are also tested to meet the standards set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). 

What happens after I get my DUI?

Contact an attorney for legal advice or the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety for driving privilege information. 

Do I need the device on all of my vehicles?

The Oklahoma Department of Public Safety requires an Interlock be installed on any vehicle you drive. 

What if I have a requirement, but I don’t own a vehicle?

The state of Oklahoma requires an Ignition Interlock device be installed on a vehicle before you will be eligible for a modified/Interlock required driver’s license. 

How do the consequences differ for a first and second DUI/DWI? Third? Fourth?

First Time Revocation – BAC less than 0.15 
  • 6-month license revocation. Driving privileges can be restored with the installation of an IID, provided qualifications are met. 
First Time Revocation – BAC 0.15 or greater or Refused Test 
  • 6-month license revocation, driving privileges can be restored with the installation of an IID, provided qualifications are met. Upon conclusion of the revocation period an IID must be installed for 1.5 years or until the license is reinstated, whichever is longer. 
2nd Revocation 
  • 12-month license revocation with mandatory interlock installation for the revocation period. Upon conclusion of the revocation period an IID is required for 3 years or until their license is reinstated, whichever is longer. 
3rd or Subsequent Revocation 
  • 3-year license revocation with mandatory interlock installation for the revocation period. Upon conclusion of the revocation period, they will be required to install an IID for 5 years or until their license is reinstated, whichever is longer. 
If an Ignition Interlock is required for driving privileges, the driver must receive a replacement license bearing the words “Interlock Required” on the face of the license for as long as they are required to have an Ignition Interlock Device. 

How often does my IID need to be serviced?

Typical services are monthly, however, state regulations allow for 65 day increments between services. 

Where can I go for Ignition Interlock service?

Your unit can be serviced at any Smart Start service center within Oklahoma or any service center that is located no further than 25 miles from the Oklahoma state line.

How can I pay for calibration?

You can pay for calibration by credit card or in the Smart Start Client Portal.

What happens if I violate?

All violations require service within 5 days of the time the violation occurred. 

What constitutes a violation in my state?

  • Three (3) penalty fails, at startup, within a fifteen (15) minute time frame. 
  • A circumvention. 
  • Three (3) retest violations constitute a reportable violation. Each retest violation thereafter constitutes a reportable violation. 
  • Removal of the device except: 
    • Upon receipt of documentation from the Installation Authority or Monitor authorizing said removal. 
    • The vehicle is being repaired. The program participant must inform the licensed service center at least every eight (8) days as to the anticipated date of completion of repairs, or 
    • The vehicle is being replaced. In the event the vehicle is being replaced by another vehicle, the removal and reinstallation of the device in the subsequent vehicle must be accomplished within eight (8) days of the removal. 
  •  Tampering. 

How do I know if I need a camera/GPS/etc.?

Your state authority will advise you of your device requirements. 

What do I need to bring to my installation appointment?

You will need to bring a vehicle, your picture ID, your driver’s license number, and payment for services. 

What should I bring back to my state authority after my device is installed?

Our service center technician will provide you with an Installation Verification Form (IVF) for you to take to your state authority. 

What do I need for removal?

To remove your Ignition Interlock Device (IID) in Oklahoma, you will need a valid reinstated driver’s license with interlock restrictions removed.
